Ask questions, meet dancers, and be part of the conversation.
I've talked to someone about this who's in a better position than I am to understand their reasoning. In the case of the older pros, they're making more money dancing for the show than competing professionally, and some of them are getting up there in competitive-age terms. In Karina's case, maybe she could still keep up with the current pro Latin field, but she's won just about all there is to win--why keep doing it? Ditto for Louis, plus he's old enough he's probably ready to move on. Most of the "older" (relative terms again) pros have gone about as far as they can expect to go as pro competitors, and the publicity and money from the show let them do things like buy and open a studio and gets tons of extra publicity to help it, or get jobs choreographing for other shows. Why NOT cash in a bit?
Anna Trebunskaya went on to compete with Pavlo Barsuk and they did extremely well.
A few years back Tony Dovilani went on to win a big title with Elena Grinenko, I think it was a World title but I do not recall.
Karina began her pro career at 16. It seems, to me, that she put in a good amount of time in that arena.
Admittedly, I did not google/research any Pro from the show to confirm this but I do think there is more to ballroom than just competition. Lot's of them have gone on to do the touring show and Julianne has done extremely well with her singing career and a few endorsements.
I could probably come up with more examples but my brain is fried from being sick.
Karina and Louis are probably one of the most talented people in the world, but they features as side dishes in national tv. Well, maybe I am going too far.....
I wouldn't go quite as far as you, but I am definitely amused sometimes by the absurdity that Karina (from what I gather) is one of the least popular pros among non-ballroom viewers -- and I'll bet a lot of people think that e.g. Lacey is a better Latin dancer than she is. Wonder what Karina thinks about that. Of course, it is the path she chose...
Doubtful. SYTYCD viewers know that Lacey is primarily a Westie who happens to have a National Youth Latin championship title on her belt. Maybe DwtS sugarcoats that a bit but I would never think of Lacey being better than Karina. But for non-dancers who are coming into this show without knowledge of Karina and Lacey's backgrounds... No, I can't see someone thinking that Lacey's better. I agree but by the semi finals I'm surprised the judges don't start leveling their scoring. It has *always* been that way on DWTS. They do not use the same criteria for each star. While I've been impressed with what Kelly has been able to accomplish, if I were to have watched this past Monday night without having seen any of the previous shows, I would wonder what the judges are smoking (frankly, I still do). But you get my drift. Stars generally get marked down if the judges think the had the ability to do better, and marked up if they improve or dance better than anticipated, depending on the baseline skill/performance level established at the beginning. So it kinda sucks to come out of the gate with a kick-@$$ performance -- you're expected to maintain that level throughout.

Better at what? There's more to dance than competition. Would Karina beat the other ladies in a comp? No doubt. But there's other things that go into the entertainment side of dance. I can see Karina's technique is much better than another dancer, but that doesn't necessarily mean I want to watch her more than someone else.
I'm annoyed with so many things about DWTS. But I love seeing ballroom dance as being about more than competition technique.
For me, I watch it for the pros, their wonderful and innovative choreography and of course the lovely dresses!...
... In fact, I never really compare the pros. They're all very different to me and bring something different and unique to the table (or in this case floor hehe).
