Matching Music to a Dance

Wasn't it a Paso? It was whats-her-nuts from The Bachelor, and they had clubs/spades/diamonds/hearts deco on their costumes IIRC.

Oh lord, the music they use for Paso on DTWS

On DWTS they make a lot of "interesting" music choices. Doesn't mean they should have ;-)

Just because a silly show uses a song choice poorly isn't the fault of the song, but the fault of the choreographer and the dancers. I'm no huge Lady Gaga fan, but I give credit where credit is due, and Bad Romance could make a fine Tango should it be done right.

i like this thread. i agree that all music can be danced to and its nice to see that the creative spirit is alive and well. :D

Two more being added to the long long list. As I mentioned in another post "Never knew I needed" by Ne-Yo off the Princess and the Frog soundtrack is a wonderful Rumba, and, From a band called Owl City "If my heart was a house" is a great Waltz. Check that last one out, its romantic *thumbs up*

What a coincidence! I was just listening to that.

I'd say it's maybe a bit fast for waltz, but it sort of works. You could do a really slow, really nice VW. The Bird and the Worm could work as a Jive, as would Dental Care. Some of the others would work for cha chas and foxtrots tempo wise, but the beats are all wrong.

Btw, I love what you've done here. Very creative, and shows that dancing doesn't always need to be to songs of strict tempo.

My husband and I host a monthly dance and are always looking for popular music we can play. These suggestions are great! Lately we've been mining the Glee soundtracks for dance music. The Glee version of "Dancing With Myself" makes a good foxtrot, for instance.

A woman at my studio mentioned that she's heard "Bust Your Windows" by Jazmine Sullivan, slightly speeded up, played as a tango at competitions. I think we are going to have to invest in some software that will let us alter music tempi.

That, or use Audacity!

Seconded. I've used Audacity to edit a number of songs (mostly cut and pastes since perversely I seem to prefer the second parts of some songs to their first parts, and at the studio they have a time limitation for spotlight/routine songs) and it works pretty well for a layperson like me. Very useful also in speeding up or slowing down songs, or cutting off excessively long intros that are non-danceable.

To TangoRocks...

Yes, TangoRocks--very useful for getting the showcase songs the way you want them (editing the long intros and so forth), for the time that you are given to perform to the song...

I discovered these today:

The Only Exception - Paramore. Slow Viennese Waltz

I Hate Boys - Christina Aguilera. Jive
