i know the obvious of reading a scoresheet... but I don't understand the 1-2, 1-3, 1-4, 1-5 of each individual dance. What does that represent and how is it determined? Please explain.

Those are the number of judges who marked the couple 1st through 2nd place, 1st through 3rd place, etc. I started to write an explanation, but it gets kind of convoluted. I recommend:

as a good explanation of how things works.

here is a sample sheet. This one is a bit "incorrect" in layout as it only says 1st - 2nd - 3rd- 4th ...
    instead of traditional 1, 1-2, 1-3, 1-4...

so you can see couple A received no 1st place marks. They received one 2nd place mark. They received three 3rd place OR BETTER (or 1st thru 3rd) (or 1-3) marks. They received five 4th place OR BETTER marks (aka 1-4). And then you stop adding after that because five is the magic number for this event, as it is a majority and any marks beyond that can't affect the placement.
