I don't know why but whenever a dance instructor asks me that-I just wish that they wouldn't. I don't really know why I like to dance. Is the answer, because it makes me happy enough? Because it is building up my self esteem. I wish I had a better answer to it...How do you respond?

Those are great answers. They are part of why I dance, too. Instructors ask that so that they can tailor their teaching to their student's needs. Someone who says "I'm very competitive and want to win competitions" is different from someone who says "So I can have fun and meet new people at socials."

oh ok. I thought they are like looking for a deep answer. I told my one instructor yesterday that I like to dance because its my passion. My mind was blank because he just taught me all of this new stuff. I felt silly...

I'd probably say the same thing to him! nothing wrong or silly with what you said imo  Passion is a strong word, means a lot of things :)

ah I see. Thanks guys :) I feel better now. My boyfriend can see its my passion. He told me the other day that he has never seen me so happy about something.

I danced because I was forced to. I dance because it creates a world away from the one I am currently living in.

Dancing is just as much a part of me as my arm or leg, and if it were taken I'd be devastated.

I get this question a lot, and a lot of the time I dont know what to say. To be honest my reason has changed since I first started. At first I just wanted to learn to dance, now it has become a passion and I have become competitive with it.

There's a very old answer to the question ...

"Because the music is playing " .

My simplest answer: I dance because it's fun. Whether I'm on a competition floor or at a social venue, it always makes me smile. For those moments when the music is playing and I'm on the floor, my stress disappears and its like nothing else matters in the world.

Because women look at me funny if I just walk up and ask to hold them for three minutes.

For me, the question is two-fold:

Q: What got you into it?
A: my daughter was getting married. Being the engineer that i am, i began looking at the father-daughter dance and realized I didn't have a clue. So my wife and i signed up for Ballroom 101 at the local community college.

Q: What keeps you in it?
A: It's one of the few emotional expressions I'm good at. I can't sing, play a musical instrument, act, or any of those things. But I can dance, and express my emotions that way - whether it's happy, sad, passionate, or intimate, I can find it in dancing, and I need that in my life.

It makes me happy in the moment, but also leaves me feeling good about all the people that I danced with and about myself. It is good exercise and helps me to have good health. It seems to be a way to prevent Alzheimer's disease. For me the list goes on and on so I don't understand why someone would not want to be doing this but of course they don't know what I know! Maybe this forum will help! :)

For the mental well-being it grants me. It's the only time I'm completely out of my own head and 100% in the present moment (you have to be! It takes so much work!) It also has the two-fold benefit of increased physical well-being. So really, why doesn't everyone do it?
